“Every moment is the chance of a lifetime.”

- Pir Vilayat

A career that isn’t managed properly is one that may not be all it can be. At CMDHB, we encourage our people to really know themselves, because unless you understand what it is you want from your career, where you want it to take you, you’ll never reach your true potential.

To get you thinking along the right lines, take ten minutes to read over the following. Answer the questions, be honest with yourself, and remember - the better you know yourself, the further you’ll go in your career with CMDHB.

Know what you have to offer:

  • What do you enjoy doing? Think of a day that you have gone home from work feeling great about what you did that day. What did you do that pushed your ‘feel good’ buttons?
  • Write down 3 things that are going well for you right now.
  • Now write 3 things you would like to have more of in your work.

What small steps can you take to make that happen?

  • Record your achievements
  • Keep your CV updated

Know who you can talk to:

  • Nurture your networks by offering people what you know
  • Talk to people who are already doing the job you are interested in doing or read about their career stories
  • Professional leaders, educators, managers, colleagues, peers, family friends are all people worth talking to about your next career step

Write down five key people you can talk to in the next fortnight

What can you offer them?

What do you want to know from them?

  • Know what motivates you:

Answer these 10 questions to check the status of your career.

  Yes No Sometimes
Are you happy with your current work/life balance?
Is your work giving you enough challenge?
Do you have the level of responsibility you need?
Are your skills and knowledge being fully utilised?
Is your job secure enough for you?
Do you feel motivated to go to work?
Your sense of ‘belonging’ at work is sufficient for you?
When you have good ideas are they recognised?
Do you feel you have a purpose at work?
Are you happy with your performance at work?
Do you have the right amount of autonomy in your work?

If you answered ‘Yes’ to all these questions, you have a great level of satisfaction in your work and your needs are mostly being met.

If you have answered ‘No’ to any of the questions – you could do with making some adjustments. Choose one of these “no” questions and think of ways you can change it to a “yes” answer.
